A passport is a travel document issued by a national government that identifies the bearer as a national of the issuing state and requests that the bearer be permitted to enter and pass through other countries. Passports are an excellent form of identification, as they verify the holder’s identity by photo and show citizenship.
All countries, with particular exceptions to Mexico and Canada, require US citizens to present a passport for entrance into their country.
Currently, through the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), Mexico and Canada require US citizens who enter their country by air to present a passport for entrance. US citizens traveling by land and by sea are permitted to enter by presenting original documentation that are proof of both citizenship and identity by way of a photo. (i.e. Both an original or certified copy of a state issued birth certificate, and a valid state issued driver’s license are required.)
WHTI anticipates that beginning June 1, 2009 passports will be required of all US citizens entering Mexico and Canada regardless of vehicle of entry. WHTI will formally announce this change giving approximately 60 days notice.
